Hydroseeding After Care Guide

Watering Requirements:

Watering in the first 14 days is vitally important. Watering ATLEAST twice a day for 15 minutes in both the morning and evening, is a good way to stop the mulch mixture from drying out. (During hot days a third or fourth water may be required). The goal is to keep the mulch mixture damp to allow for maximum germination. Using an automatic timer and sprinklers, is highly recommended to accurately monitor that your seeds are getting enough water. From day 15 onwards it is recommended to move to one large watering in the morning. At this point we are no longer keeping the seeds on top of the soil damp, but are moving to watering deeper into the soil to promote stronger root growth.

Growth Expectations:

Week 1: It is normal to see no noticeable germination to happen in the first week.

Week 2: Germination is expected but may look sporadic and patchy. Many factors determine when seeds germinate, including sun hours, seed types, watering, etc.

Week 3 & 4: It is important to continue watering during this time. This is when the grass will begin to fill in and thicken up. Once the grass has reached 100mm, it will be ready for its first mow.

Mowing:

Your new lawn can be mowed as soon as the grass blades are about 100mm high and the ground is dry. Mowing will stimulate growth and encourage the grass to bush out rather than grow up. It is important to mow at the correct height to avoid “scalping” of the new grass blades. Never remove more than the top 1/3 of the grass blade. Do not use a mulching mower until the lawn has been mowed 5 or 6 times with a conventional mower. During the fast growing periods, it is recommended that you mow your lawn twice a week.

Fertilising & Weed Treatments:

At around the 4 - 6 week mark, your new grass will have eaten up all the fertiliser in the hydroseeding mixture. When the grass starts to lighten up in colour, it is a good indicator that it requires more food. At this point, you should apply a fertiliser high in Nitrogen and Iron to give your new lawn the boost it needs. This is a product I can supply if requested. Fertilising should be completed around 4 times a year to ensure your grass is getting a good range of nutrients. Weed treatment requirements can differ depending on your grass types. We work in with local lawn experts who can provide tailored plans for your lawn or if you would like to learn more about lawn maintance, we suggest joining the best lawn care group in NZ on Facebook (New Zealand Lawn Addicts).
